Sexism in Technology: Ose DiCarlo and the Consumer Technology Association

The Consumer Electronic Show is a convention displaying the most modern technological advances. My girlfriend, dork as she is, follows the news surrounding the technology, saw this robotic toy, and ordered it immediately. Last year, Lora DiCarlo came out with a robotic sex toy: the Ose.

The Ose DiCarlo uses advanced robotics to – as they say – help deliver blended orgasms, and it really is something to be admired. The neck bends above the base at remarkable angles, accommodating for many different bodies. The shaft has a robotic stroker to stimulate the g-spot and the base has a function that mirrors the Womanizer or the We-Vibe Melt‘s suction-like structure. And it delivers g-spot stimulation and replicates the feeling of oral sex at the same time.

I don’t usually follow technology but the Ose Lora DiCarlo stuck out to me. It won the CES robotics award of 2019 for its construction. However, and this is super shitty but not at all unexpected, the award was taken back. Among the words describing why the CTA took back the award were “profane,” “immoral,” and “obscene.”

According to the CTA the Ose Lora DiCarlo

“does not fit into any of our existing product categories and should not have been accepted for the Innovation Awards Program. CES is a professional business show, and porn, adult toys and sex tech products are not part of the event.”

The CTA went on to ban the Ose from the CES. Hello complete-and-utter bullshit sexism. However, Lora DiCarlo fought the reversal and won, and ultimately may have changed the CES. Now sex technology is allowed under the “Health and Wellness” section of the show. While VR porn is not allowed, sex toy technology is because it truly is a part of health and wellness.

There is a requirement for sex toys to be considered in the CES, however. The sex technology should be “innovative and include new or emerging tech.” Because, Karen Chupka who oversees the CES said, “We don’t want to see rows and rows of just standard vibrators.”

Consumer Technology Association returned the award admitting that the “CTA did not handle this award properly.”

The Ose DiCarlo truly is innovative technology, but does that make it a better sex toy? I personally found that it took so much work to calibrate that by the time I set it up, I was bored of the whole thing. However, there’s no denying the Ose is a great piece of technology, even the CTA agrees.
